About me

I always loved making, even as a small child, I remember moulding pieces from plasticine and being thrilled by the feel of it in my hands. When I discovered clay at a Hackney, hand-building, evening class, I felt instant gratification on completion of a small pig. The journey started.

After completion City and Guilds in Ceramics, beginners, intermediate and advanced, I enrolled at St. Martins school of art, but personal circumstances meant I couldn’t continue this path. However, 25 years later I found myself back in the studio.

My early work

Animals have always featured in my work, from the simple forms of pre-Columbian pottery, animals on Roman and Greek ceramics, to the crude representations of domesticated animals. There are also geological influences, both rock and fossil, and skeletal influences in my early work.

Current work

I have an interest in conservation and natural history, and with a degree in environmental science, I like to draw on this, particularly Red List, endangered species, such as the pangolin. Przewalski’s horse is an example of reintroduced species, the vast projects bringing hope to nature returning to the wild and hope for everyone.
Most of my pieces begin as pinch pots, the fingerprints evident in some finished pieces. I like to leave these because they make for an interesting glaze pattern when the glaze settles on an uneven surface during firing. All the clay is stoneware, but my current favourites are Vulcan, a black clay, and Draycott, a white clay. Slips, oxides and underglaze colours are the main colouring agents, but some are decorated with studio, stoneware glazes only.

Commissions

As well as the pieces shown, I can make custom pieces of your pet to order, be it a dog, cat, or indeed chinchilla, I am happy to take on a challenge. Please get in touch via my website or Instagram.

Future work

I am planning a series of slip cast pieces, drawing on the influence of my work with The Riverfly Partnership and The River’s Trust. This is a conservation role and the work will include illustrations of Mayfly, Dragonfly and Stonefly species. Watch this space for future developments!
